Michigan International Speedway is celebrating its 50th Anniversary! A season-long celebration has already kicked off to commemorate the historic memories, races, and drivers. Located in the Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is NASCAR’s fastest racetrack. Each year, it brings the love of racing to fans and drivers around the world.
In September, 1967, Lawrence H. LoPatin broke ground in Cambridge Township. With the help of Detroit-area land developers and engineers, Michigan International Speedway (MIS) was born. The inaugural race was a 250-mile open wheel event that took place on October 13, 1968 and was won by Ronnie Bucknum.
In a recent press release, President Rick Brenner said, “Fans will want to stay tuned as we continue to rollout different highlights to showcase the history of our sport and the automobile in Michigan.” Here are some ways fans can enjoy the historic past of Michigan International Speedway:
- Website – Photos and videos are being posted in celebration of the last 50 years.
- Car and Memorabilia Display – A car and memorabilia display will feature the history of racing at the track for fans to enjoy.
- Iconic Drivers and Moments – MIS will share iconic moments and great drivers on its social media and website.
- Pace Car – The track will be incorporating fan photos on the promo pace car in 2018.
Michigan International Speedway has created a new logo in celebration of their anniversary. According to the press release, “the gold M in the middle harkens back to the original logo. The color has been changed to gold from green to represent 50 years. The trees and the sun at the bottom tie in the current logo. The circle incorporates the design of the inaugural logo.”
The track has welcomed fans from around the world to our county for 50 years. Rich in history and tradition, Michigan International Speedway is a major economic driver in our area. Thank you to everyone at MIS who has been a critical part in helping make Lenawee County a recognized location for serious NASCAR enthusiasts. Visit MISpeedway50.com for the 2018 race schedule.
