ADRIAN,7/15/2013 – The City of Adrian and Lenawee Now are pleased to announce the sale of 545 Industrial Drive, Adrian, (former Cargotainer site) to Metcan Industries. Metcan is a Canadian firm with plants in Manitoba and Ontario. The firm manufactures a product used in the purification of steel. Used when steel is in the molten state, the product excels at removing impurities and results in stronger steel.
Metcan currently enjoys market share dominance in the Canadian steel market and is looking to bring the product to the American steel market. Preliminary work with an American manufacturer resulted in a much improved product and a significant savings. Metcan is led by Dean McCann, who built the company from its inception. McCann will be investing nearly $3.5 million in the property, renovation, and equipment, and anticipates production will start in winter 2013/14.
The company will employ 5 at the start of production, and as sales increase, will add five employees with each shift it adds. Metcan is also in the final stages of a patent on a second potential product, and when in full production, the Adrian plant could employ 30.
