Lenawee County participated in Manufacturing Day 2016 and gave high school students a better understanding of local manufacturing and career options for the future.

Lenawee County’s first ever Manufacturing Day was held on October 7, 2016. We presented this to highlight future needs in the workforce and to pen their eyes to the possibility of a career in manufacturing. Students from Hudson High School, LISD TECH Center, Onsted High School, Southern Michigan Center for Science and Industry, and Tecumseh High School toured different factories within Lenawee County as a part of initiative to build a future workforce in manufacturing. Although Manufacturing Day is new to Lenawee County, it has been taking place all across the country for five years now. With local manufacturing booming, and many employees nearing retirement, our local manufacturers are searching for fresh minds that are willing to learn. This event allowed students to see what manufacturers do firsthand and showed them it is no longer just a dirty job, and there is an abundance of opportunities locally. Local manufacturers are always in need of new employees ready to raise the standard in manufacturing. As seniors in high school are preparing to take their next step in life, this was a great experience for those who are still trying to figure out their next move.

Nearly 200 students attended Manufacturing Day this year. Students were divided into groups of 15 for a better learning experience and attended two tours. The following 13 companies hosted the students; Aerospace Services, Anderson Development, Axis Engineering, General Broach, Glycon, Hi-Lex, ididit, Inteva, Kirchhoff Van-Rob, L and W, Meridian Mechatronics, Adrian Precision Machining and Plastic Omnium. Our turnout was impeccable for this event alone. Lenawee County has a large number of manufacturers that gave personal tours to students in hopes that they saw manufacturing in a new light.
