His journey began in the private sector at Ionia County National Bank, where he worked his way from a coin machine operator right after high school and progressed to through the ranks, while he put himself through college and graduate school. Finished at the bank as a Commercial Loan Officer and Loan Committee Member with voting rights His experience in commercial real estate and lending, including leadership roles at Fifth Third Bank, prepared him for the financial complexities that businesses encounter daily.
Calley’s transition into public service in 2003 on the Ionia County Board of Commissioners, while still working at the bank. During a recession in the mid-2000s, Calley became interested in politics on the state level. Calley reflected in an mlive interview on his start in government:
“I saw … very, strong well-managed companies just struggling to survive,” he said. “I looked at state government that seemed to not really have a strategy, or if there was a strategy it was desperately clinging to the past and hoping that it will just somehow return, as opposed to understanding that the world had changed and we have to learn to change ourselves.
He won the 47th district Michigan House of Representatives, focusing on fostering an environment ripe for job creation and sustainable growth.
