Entrepreneurship begins with a dream and is fueled by passion and intense hustle. entrepreneurs don’t go it alone—having support and resources is essential for starting and growing a business. We’re thrilled to work with Kandice Karll Newsome of Disaster Kraft as part of our Lean Rocket Lab Cohort, a business boot camp that equips small businesses with training, support, and connections needed to take their ventures to the next level. In honor of Global Entrepreneurship Month, we are excited to share her story:
“My husband and I started Disaster Kraft because we wanted a more eco-friendly candle. We were huge Bath and Body Works candle lovers, but after having our ceiling painted, we noticed soot buildup. We realized it was from burning paraffin candles, and that led us to rethink our candle choices.
As candle lovers, we wanted something that still had a great scent but was non-toxic and more sustainable. So, we began making hemp wax candles, which are made from hydrogenated hemp seed oil. The name of our business, Disaster Kraft, has a unique backstory. I have dealt with depression for most of my life, and during my lowest moments, crafting became my outlet. Candle-making was one of the few things that held my ADHD brain’s attention. The name reflects the idea that even in the midst of chaos, I find solace in crafting.
The “inspired by music” aspect of our brand came naturally. Just as a scent can instantly transport you to a memory, a song can do the same thing. It felt seamless to combine these two elements. Often, we’ll start with a song that resonates with us or someone we love, and from there, we create a scent that captures the essence of that song. Some songs feel floral, while others evoke woodsy or earthy tones. For instance, we created a candle called “Here Comes the Sun” for my brother and sister-in-law, inspired by their wedding song and their love for sunflowers. We wanted a scent that reflected the warmth and openness of their fall wedding.
I love being in Lenawee County. I grew up in Monroe County, and while it’s not far, crossing the border into Adrian feels like stepping into a different world. The history here, particularly in downtown Adrian, is amazing, and being part of its revitalization is an incredible experience.
The support we’ve received from the local community has been amazing. Programs like the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Lenawee Now, and Launch Lenawee have all played a crucial role in helping us get on our feet and stay on track. Networking has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey, allowing us to meet incredible people, form meaningful friendships, and foster partnerships with local businesses. Being part of chamber events and the Leadership Lenawee program has further deepened our connection to the community. It’s inspiring to see community leaders come together, each with their own mission, but all united for the greater good of Lenawee County.
As an entrepreneur, one of my biggest successes has been forming wholesale partnerships with local businesses. It’s incredibly rewarding when a local store reaches out, wanting to collaborate and promote each other’s work.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to be in the process of trademarking our candle line. This will help us expand beyond the local market and potentially reach a global audience. I’m also excited about staying rooted in Adrian, watching both our business and the community grow together.”
Kandice’s journey with Disaster Kraft is a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and community support. We’ve enjoyed seeing what she brings to the county, and been pleased to work with her in our inaugural Lean Rocket Lab Cohort. We look forward to seeing her continued success.
