When we welcomed 2020 last January, no one was preparing their business or life for a global pandemic, stay at home orders, masks, business closures, or high unemployment. Some of our local businesses have thrived, others are surviving, and a few have closed. To say that our business and community leaders are experiencing enormous challenges is a gross understatement. But we live in a county filled with relentless people who are determined to come together in the face of adversity.

Here at Lenawee Now, we say that there are two ways to view Lenawee County’s economy. You can reminisce about the good old days and lament about what used to be, or you can roll up your sleeves and help build a stronger future. We’ve chosen the latter. Fostering collaborative problem solving with our local and regional partners, educators, and local businesses will allow us to overcome the new challenges we are presented with each day.

Many of our local businesses are still struggling due to the shutdown and the uncertainties of what tomorrow will bring. This is causing concern for both owners and employees alike. But we remain optimistic. Our team is working every day to find relief for our businesses, and we are here to help keep our local establishments operational until the restrictions lift.

That said, none of this would be possible without the continuous support from our investors. Their generosity is what makes it possible to provide our local businesses with the resources necessary to keep their doors open. This year, we are especially appreciative of their investment as it has allowed us to assist businesses during this difficult time. We’ve worked with our regional partners to facilitate grant and low-interest loan opportunities for businesses and nonprofits affected by COVID-19. These programs brought over $75,000,000 of aid for our businesses, which have helped them adjust to the changing economic landscape.

The hurdles have been unpredictable and ever-changing, but we ask that you continue to believe in each other and the wonderful county that we live in by buying local, ordering takeout, and spending your dollars in our communities. We will get through this together, and we will come out stronger than ever!

On behalf of the entire Lenawee Now staff, we express our deepest gratitude for our investors and wish everyone a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season.
